Antidote to body shaming

Image
Body shaming according to google’s definition;                          “The action or practice of humiliating someone, by making mocking or critical comments about their body shape or size” I read loads of article available about  body-shaming , and on those I could lay my hands on, non made much emphasizes on the  antidote .   Most of the points therein however was directed towards cautioning and educating the public on the topic. Oher write ups advised victims to stay confident, like  it was one easy thing to do in the face of unending shaming.  Truth be told, as long as some people remains alien to how badly the shoe of body shaming pinches their victims, the jest, boos, shaming etc,  they'd never stop. So there's a need for the antidote as I've rightly put to fore in this article. Well as  weird  as t...

Death is inevitable

Image
Cemeteries  are not grocery stores, meant to be sited very commonly. So passing by one recently, I noticed an  inscription  on its gate which struck me; ‘We were once like you’ And then subtly, I had replied; We are  definitely  going to be like you too. Maybe not now, but eventually. Not wanting to sound like a preacher now, the bible says,  “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”  Psalm 90;12. This is like an eye opener of sort. Regularly, we all should be conscious of the fact that our days are numbered on this planet. It doesn’t matter if you live twenty decades, calculating it into days is not too hard a Mathematics. And as it ever occurred to you that as soon as anyone breathes his last, all which is left is nothing but  memories?  The  corpse , a mass of lifeless flesh, becomes a waste, to be subsequently buried. Save for science anyway, certain parts of  the dead...

SPECIAL FEATURE: A unique Orphanage - Ijamido Children's Home

Image
Sometimes in  2009  fresh from the University, I wanted an  adventure  to burn some youthful energy. Getting closer to  Priscilla Awe Olajumoke availed me that opportunity .  She was one of the Media Volunteers of  Ijamido Children Home  as at that time and through her, I got to know about this uniquely different Orphanage,  Ijamido Children’s Home s ituated at  147, Ilo-Awela Road, Toll Gate Bus Stop, Ota, Ogun State . The warm embrace of smiling kids greeted me the first day I sauntered into the entrance.  Some called me  “aunty”,  others simply said  “mummy”.  This was despite the fact that we were meeting for the very first time. My heart melted at that and even though I never really  volunteered  owing to some unforeseen circumstances, I have always sought to know more.    Ijamido Orphanage  fondly referred to by her lovers as  ‘The Home’,  is a...

The 'poison' we consume and call meal

Image
When  rat dung  is found in a burger, it instantly enjoys prompt media attention.  Cockroach feeler  in a pizza bite, d ead ants  in a whole meal, or if a drink is bought and consumed supposedly after the  shelve life  is passed. The food company that churned that especially  unhealthy meal , in no time, becomes popular, for the wrong reasons. I have watched on the internet,  footages  of  chefs  spiting into doughnuts before  baking . A particular  waitress  even went as far as dipping her hands into her  pubic , when no one was looking, rubbed it on a  burger , and joyfully served it to innocent  customers. These and many more, are just one of the  ‘poisons’  that we consume on a daily basis, and call meals. The hospitality business is one of the fastest growing, owing to the high profitability margin too. But then it is essential, that an effective check be put i...

Manners cost nothing

Image
I really do not know if I should consider the following my personal pet peeves, but then I know that they are manners that count. Besides, a strict adherence to them shows that one isn’t ill mannered as well. 1.        Knocking before entering people’s houses and/or rooms, not barging in: This is not just an assumption, people do it. Regardless of your level of closeness to anyone, as long as you are not a cop that is trying to catch a criminal unaware, common sense dictates that you knock before you enter. I have heard complaints from men/women alike that the siblings of their spouses just barges into their rooms, only to find them both naked. Need anyone to point out this again as impolite? 2.        Respect the privacy of others and their space: Similar to the one above, that is not too much to ask though. 3.        Do not overstay your welcome in people’s houses/lives; Alway...

Drink responsibly

Just before the ban on cigarette advert in the country, the footnote/voice-over was; “The Federal Ministry of Health, warns that, smokers, are liable to die young” That sounds scary enough for anyone  not to smoke, even though it never stopped defiant children from wanting to taste death despite living still. Adverts for alcoholic drinks aren’t any different. Usually after all those classy display of handsome dudes and sexy models comes; “Not suitable for persons under 18, drink responsibly” My point exactly!   Globally, those below 18 years  are described as minors, mini persons not adult enough to make major life decisions. They are not even allowed to vote, so no surprises that alcohols are not meant to be consumed by them. But for an adult, I am still in awe of how someone finds it difficult to know the limit of alcohol consumption that births instant insanity from them. The rate at which alcohol gulped automatically remodels a com...
