TALES OF A YOUTH CORP MEMBER 3 (Settling to Camp)

Image
At dusk a Camp Official fixed me up in a room that had sixteen other girls. An iron makeshift served as Hostels, while a flaccid   ‘two and half’   inches mattress laid me down to sleep almost immediately like an   Iroko.   Someone must have helped me with my luggage carefully to my bedside;I do not remember doing that, no thanks to the fact that I was exhausted.             The Sound of   whistles   meant for the morning drills radiated into dawn, sound so sonorous that it could naturally wake the dead.   I am not an early bed though, so no surprises that I wasn’t really in my best form that particular morning. I managed to grab a bucket by the way, trekked to the manpower tap to join the queue, queued again to take my bath at the bathroom built with zinc, before getting into my white shirts and shorts in preparation for the parade.  The Population of the Camp on the other hand...

MALARIA TRULY KILLS; MY ENCOUNTER

Image
No African is alien to the causative agent of  Malaria. They are M osquitoes. An insect that is actually a part of us as we grew in Sub Sahara Africa if I may say. Science Lessons taught us too about the  Anopheles, which is the name of the mosquito specie that carries the malaria parasite in question. There's a popular saying of how Malaria kills and like seriously, I have ignorantly always wondered how? An Uncle of mine was clinically confirmed dead about a decade ago. Here was a very agile, seeming strong man in his late thirties. He had been feeling dizzy and uneasy for almost a Month yet he never bothered. The uneasiness became rather unbearable  so  he simply walked himself to the Hospital and in few hours, he was dead. Despite the fact that we bemoaned the fact that we lost a very promising young man to an ordinary, yet preventable Malaria, the African mentality in us still maintained that he might have been bewitched. We found it difficult to...

MEN ARE 'NOT' STRONG

Image
Many men might   skip   this going by this caption especially. It clearly derogates a manly ego. But to those that made it here, resist the temptation to see me as a   chauvinist. Men are perceived to be naturally   stronger   than women. Boys even often put to   fore   their strength and supposedly   domineering   mien to the girls. Anyway, I grew up with no sibling and this had toughened me somehow. Unconsciously though, I had looked forward to the supposed strength of a man since I never really grew up with one. Dad wasn’t always around.  But guess what I discovered afterwards? Men are folks whose real nature is   never commensurate   to the level of strength ascribed to them.        This I considered   overly hyped. Unfortunately, they inadvertently try to measure up to what is expected of them. From being required to stay   manly   and ...

Unappreciation

Image
This is plainly not showing gratitude. Synonyms however includes; ingrate, thankless and ungrateful. While the relative words are; rude, thoughtless and simply ungracious. My emphasis goes all out to people who had enjoyed any form of assistance from the other person at one point in their life.  How well has the helper been appreciated by you? Sparingly, or never at all?  Many even had the effrontery to completely   chop off   the fingers that fed them.   How sad! To the popular saying;   many dogs that lay helpless by the roadside are actually looking for food, so they could bite after being fed. No truer words! Posterity says that no form of assistance should be considered   erstwhile.   And why on earth should we forget that   one person   who was there when we needed succor? Think about it! And even when you put it to the ungrateful like; “But s/he lent you cash for your business start up” ...

My 'two cents' on the state of Nigeria

Image
There is a   seasoned journalist of over three decades experience that I know, his name is   Samuel Ajayi . He is one writer I admire and how he manages to constantly write on the   State of Nigeria   still amazes me. With   no conflicting yet   unflinching  headlines every other day on his   face book   timeline.  Unlike him, I often consider this a   frustrating   thing to ponder on   for too long, I  see no reason why I should bother over what seems to have no immediate lasting solution. But as   Nigeria   goes to the polls yet again, I have to drop   this   on what I feel about   her. R outinely, we com plain about   incumbent leaders  just because they have not been able to satisfy the needs of the masses. And in almost all the sectors in the Country, there’s always a   glaring inadequacy   staring us right there in the face. The   Healt...
